So my girlfriend's PC running Vista stopped booting last week. It was freezing on "crcdisk.sys" when I attempted to boot in Safe Mode. The teenage kids were not happy... "we want to update our iPods" they told me. So I started looking into the problem.
I first tried booting the machine using a Ubuntu CD. After specifying "noapic", I got it to boot and was able to mount and read the Vista disk no problem, but couldn't find a way to "fsck" it... I then decided to take the hard disk out of the machine and bring it into my PC running Windows XP SP3. My PC booted fine with the added SATA disk. I then opened up a terminal windows and ran "chkdsk e: /x /f" and guess what... it did check the disk and applied a number of fixes. I then moved the hard disk back to the original machine, crossed my fingers and it .... yes ... booted ... slowly, but surely.
Google returned numerous hits of Vista freezing on "chkdsk.sys" but I found none that indicated a clear fix; this could be one solution if you are lucky enough to have two machines lying around.
Good luck!
:o)
